Frequently Asked Questions
What is Blackout Drapery Lining?
Blackout Drapery Linings are used to prevent exterior light sources from entering a room through the window. They are used in hotel rooms where guests may be trying to sleep in, as well as in the home, to protect furnishings from UVA and UVB rays, or to darken rooms to allow infants, or other family members, to sleep during daylight hours.
What is the difference between 2-Pass and 3-Pass blackout linings?
All blackout drapery linings (BDL) start with a base cloth which is normally a polyester/cotton blend. A 3-pass blackout will get a first coat - or "pass" - of white acrylic foam to seal the fabric weave and create a pleasant appearance of what will become the cloth side of the lining. The second pass is a black opaque coat which actually blocks out the light. This is followed by a third pass, a finish coat, in either white or ecru. 2-Pass BLD's is made the same way, with the exception that they do not receive the first coat of the white acrylic foam. This causes the 2-pass lining to have a grey cloth side.
Should I use 2-pass or 3-pass Blackout?
If the lining is to be sewn into the drapery then a 2-pass is recommended. A 3-pass should be used when the blackout lining is to be used as a blackout drapery on its own track. The degree of light blocking capability is the same for both 2-pass and 3-pass.
How do I clean Blackout Drapes?
Recommended care consists of soft brushing or vacuuming. In cases where cleaning is absolutely necessary, use a Professional Dry Cleaner. DO NOT use coin operated dry cleaning machines as they will damage the fabric.
